Crowd tags are then displayed and added to fonts automatically for all FontBase users. FontBase does a great job of not only organizing and managing my font libraries but also allows me to sync those fonts to any device with the software installed. With crowd tags, every tagged font counts: when the same tag is added to the same font by different people three or more times, it becomes a crowd tag. This means they can classify fonts much better! The negative side is that they can't do it as fast as machines, but by combining the efforts of many people, a lot of great things can be achieved. People are much better at recognizing patterns and determining visual hierarchy and seeing a bigger picture out of smaller parts. But this is only the first part, now let's get to the other. Soon you'll see tags appearing on your fonts, and gradually, as our AI trains more, all fonts will be tagged with basic tags. Now it just needs a bit more testing and eventually we will run it to automatically tag all the font data in our system, and that's a lot - around 1.7 million right now. This was a lot of work, but eventually it was worth it: after our algorithm analyzed the images, it became pretty decent at classifying fonts by itself. Then, we collected lots of font images and tagged them manually and according to our classification system. Not to reinvent the wheel, we researched what is already out there, and in the end came up with this:

If you would like to update to a new version, simply download the new FontBase AppImage. This is entirely optional and currently needs to be configured by the user. To teach a machine to classify fonts, we needed a simple scheme of font classification: what classes are primary, what subclasses they have, what classes contadict each other. If you want to restrict what FontBase can do on your system, you can run the AppImage in a sandbox like Firejail. First, let's talk about our AI (his name is Sparky), which we have trained using machine learning. We decided to tackle the problem in two ways: training an AI to classify fonts and adding crowd tags. FontBase is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, but. Many of you were asking us to add the ability to search fonts by font type, so we needed to create a robust way to determine which font belongs to a certain class. Another thing I like about Font Base is Nested folders support.

Some fonts may include this data, but these cases are rather rare and even if a font file has this information, it most likely is inconsistent. Getting the information needed to classify such font as sans-serif, serif or bold, can be really tricky or almost impossible. As you probably know, a font file can be almost empty, including nothing except the font name and, well, the font glyphs themselves. In case a font has multiple styles, you can preview all of them by clicking on View Details.Font classification is hard. You can change the font preview size directly from the application toolbar, while the preview text can be customized from its settings. You also need to preview fonts or else this would be useless, right? FontBase lets users preview fonts while also allowing some customization. You can also create font collections, to which you can add fonts by using drag and drop. For quick access, you can pin or add a font to your favorites. The built-in search lets you quickly find your favorite font. You can choose to start the application automatically on login if you want to have the fonts ready as soon as you load your desktop. When you close the application, all the fonts are deactivated until you launch FontBase the next time. Instead, it "activates" them - you can activate a font by clicking on the box / circle at the left side of the font's name. By deactivating fonts after you're done using them, graphics applications should load faster.
